The Belgian Group for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (BGSMG) groups together, in an individual capacity or as a collective member, specialists in the field of fundamental and applied geotechnical engineering: theoreticians and practical engineers from academic or research institutions, from general or companies specialising in foundation or soil improvement techniques, from engineering consultancies, government agencies and clients...
The Belgian Group for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering is the Belgian member of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, founded by Terzaghi in 1936, which unites all National Groups.
The grouping cooperates with related societies, namely the Societies for Rock Mechanics and Engineering Geology.
The group's activities include:
- The organisation of colloquia, study days, conferences and site visits.
- The preparation and coordination of Belgian participation in the activities of the International Association and the European Section.
- The participation by Belgian specialists in technical committees at International and European level, including for the purpose of drafting ISO, CEN and EUROCODE standards.
- The participation by young geotechnical engineers in "Young Geotechnical Engineers Conferences".
